After decades of failed socialism, Argentina recently became the first country in history to elect a libertarian president in the person of Javier Milei.
But what does “libertarian” actually mean?
You could probably find a dozen definitions. Recently Milei tried to break it down as simply as possible.
During a television interview, the host asked in Spanish (this is the English translation), “What is it to be a libertarian? Explain to me quickly in two words.”
“Why do you define yourself as a libertarian?” the host added.
Milei used more than two words, but he still kept it basic.

“I define it for you by default,” Milei replied.
He continued, “What would someone on the Right be like? Someone who doesn’t mind who you trade with is a liberal, economically speaking. But it bothers him who you get into bed with.”
He “is a cultural conservative” Milei explained.
The host, seeming confused, asked Milei to repeat himself to clarify.
“A right-wing person is someone who is economically liberal,” Milei repeated. “Someone who doesn’t mind who you trade with. But cares who you sleep with. Is a cultural conservative.”
The host understood, saying “Ok, I get it.
Milei continued, “On the other hand, a left-wing person is liberal culturally, they don’t care who you get into bed with. But is interventionist economically. It doesn’t let you trade with whoever you want.”
“What would a libertarian person be?” Milei then rhetorically asked.
“Someone who believes in unrestricted respect for the life project of others,” he stated. “With which one is old enough to get into bed with whoever you want. With everyone you want.”
The host asked, “Is that how a libertarian thinks?”
“Exactly,” Milei replied, adding, “and obviously you can trade with whoever you want.”
“You are a libertarian then,” the host said.
“Exactly,” Milei repeated.
Again, Milei’s definition of libertarian is only one, but it’s a good one, and it’s hard to imagine most self-described libertarians disagreeing with it.
In the United States, the two dominant political parties do not comprehensively stand for a cohesive concept of freedom similar to Milei’s libertarianism.
Hopefully that can eventually change.
