New Hampshire is the number one state for freedom in America.
At least according to theCato Institute.
The libertarian think tank recently released a report called Freedom in the 50 States showcasing which states had the most freedom using a variety of metrics—everything from gun rights to school choice to medical freedom—and New Hampshire checked the most boxes.
According to the report, “The weighted sum of all the variables is used to produce the overall freedom ranking of the states.”
It added, “New Hampshire is once again the freest state in the Union and in 2022 set the record for the highest freedom score ever recorded in the 21st century.”
Whoa. That’s saying something.
Part of freedom-friendly policies having so much success in the Granite State might be due in part to the strong presence of the Hazlitt Coalition, a group of liberty-friendly legislators across the country organized by the American Action Fund, a project of the libertarian-leaning student group Young Americans for Liberty (YAL).
According to the group, New Hampshire is “by far, the home of our largest contingent of liberty legislators in the country.”
While New Hampshire was a faraway number one, it was followed by Florida, South Dakota, Nevada, and Arizona.
At the bottom of Cato’s list? Oregon, New Jersey, California, Hawaii, and last place…
New York.
Freedom in the 50 States claims it is “the first index at any level to measure both economic and personal freedoms and remains the only index to do so at the state level.”
