A new poll released Friday seemed to indicate that a majority of Americans are tired of the wars the U.S. has been involved with in the Middle East and are not eager to get into any new wars, even regarding Ukraine.

Concerned Veterans for America teamed up with You.gov to measure public opinion on the Biden Administration’s foreign policy, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the proper use of the military.

In their poll, 44% had an unfavorable opinion of how Biden has approached the war in Ukraine. About a third had a favorable opinion.

On the question, “Do you support or oppose the United States military becoming directly involved in combat in the Russia-Ukraine war?” 47% opposed the U.S. taking military action in that country, with 27% strongly opposed and 19% somewhat opposed.

Just about a quarter of poll participants supported direct U.S. military involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war.

This is in line with other polls taken on the question of American military action. A Quinnipiac poll taken in March, mere weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, revealed that a large majority of Americans – 75% – said the “U.S. should do whatever it can to help Ukraine – without risking a direct war between the U.S. and Russia.’

The CVA-You.gov poll also asked if America’s global military presence should be reduced. 40% thought it should be reduced with 31% believing it is fine as is. Only 12% wanted to see the U.S.’s military engagement increase around the world.

A majority – 52% also said they would oppose sending more troops to the Middle East

17% said they would support sending more U.S. troops to the region of Ukraine.

Dan Caldwell, a senior adviser with CVA, said in a statement by the group touting the poll’s findings, “With historic economic challenges at home, it’s not surprising that the American people are wary of taking on new security commitments abroad and starting a war with a nuclear-armed Russia.”

The poll was conducted between June 23 – June 29, 2022.
