The latest Leftist fascism appears to focus on fashion. The micro-fiber-management of material used to make clothing. The current arrangements are (apparently) unsustainable, and the same experts who’ve mucked up everything else are turning their evil eye on the garment industry.
We’re not all expected to wear Mao suits yet (devolution is a process). But the European Union is prepared to roll out some new guidelines. They will ensure you are appropriately clothed when chestfeeding your child unit. Or when hoofing it twenty miles to catch the commuter rail (thanks to the Donkey Party, not everyone will be able to afford horses in Newtopia).
The Luddites of the European Commission (EC) have identified another route of attack in their endless war to force the peasants to conform to pre-industrial lifestyles. (It matters what the EU does because Leftists in the United States look to that supreme ministry of minding other people’s business as a model for future policy.)
On Wednesday, as part of its Green New Deal, the EC released the “EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles” (available here), a framework for bending the textile and apparel industry to its will by completely retooling it within the next eight years. …
Brussels claims the strategy “sets out the vision and concrete actions to ensure that by 2030 textile products placed on the EU market are long-lived and recyclable, made as much as possible of recycled fibres, free of hazardous substances and produced in respect of social rights and the environment.”
As with all such intrusions, “accessible” and “affordable” must be sacrificed for the good of the community. The inflation-adjusted prices will be the hand-me-down costs as new items – especially anything with comfort and style – will only be available to the people making the rules.
We’ll call them rulers.
Meetings in Davos or gatherings like the Oscars will feature the finest in comfort and style (and optional acts of assault) because – as John F. Kerry said when asked why the Climate Czar gets to fly in private jets to Climate Conferences, his job comes with expectations and requirements.
So did Marie Antoinette’s until it didn’t.
It’s not just your clothes.
While I’m on the topic of meddling, perhaps you’ve seen ads to contact Congress to oppose S299s. Its official name is the American Innovation and Choice Online Act. It gives government regulators control over what online retailers are allowed to do with their own business.
This bill prohibits certain large online platforms from engaging in specified acts, including giving preference to their own products on the platform, unfairly limiting the availability on the platform of competing products from another business, or discriminating in the application or enforcement of the platform’s terms of service among similarly situated users.
Further, a platform may not materially restrict or impede the capacity of a competing business user to access or interoperate with the same platform, operating system, or hardware or software features. …
The primary target is Amazon and AmazonPrime Members, who get a pile of benefits for membership. But S2992 would relieve Amazon or anyone else like them from running their own business, deciding whose products they will sell, and deny them the option of creating incentives to engage in additional commerce.
