The current Ukraine-Russia border war is a continuation of 500 years of tribal greed that can only be satiated by acquiring new territories for a new source of wealth.
The USA began to be a factor in the world in the 1800s when the slave trade was the ultimate path to wealth. The money created in the cotton industry was the first real acknowledgment that the USA even existed in the eyes of London and Europe.
The next international effect of the US was as a safety valve for malcontents and useless mouths. This resulted in a huge influx of refugees from Ireland and the rest of Europe during the 1840-1850 famines. Millions of new citizens arrived to populate the country. The weather was a cause of the famines, but war and civil unrest played a large part with the common peasants desperate for a better life.
The Crimean War was the last gasp of the old pre-industrial “interest” system. Britain, France, and Ottomans fought Russia for control of the Crimea and Black Sea coast in another religious/trade-based border war.
Our War Between the States initiated the concept of total war designed for central economic control across the continent. This was a major development in international relations. The entire economy of the US was turned into a war machine. What went unnoticed was the huge industrial development that evolved along with it. The great engine was ignited and never slowed for 100 years.
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 was the last gasp of the Euro-peon based system of expansion by border war but it was only evident decades later. Prussia was thirsting for recognition and control of central Europe. France had devolved into a second-rate power as her industrial development had lagged behind Germany and Britain and was living on the reputation of Napoleon I.
